Credit Union Community Hope Initiative raises more than $30K for the homeless

Sunny, bright blue skies and temperatures climbing to the high 70s was the start of a picture perfect day for the 106 golfers who traveled to Juniper Hill Golf Course to participate in the Credit Union Community Hope Initiative’s Charity Golf Tournament to benefit the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless (Coalition) on August 14.  The group enjoyed a wonderful day of golf and camaraderie while their generosity was the overall winner with more than $30,000 raised from the day’s event for the Coalition.

Digital Federal Credit Union and Members Plus Credit Union showed their commitment to the cause by sponsoring the tournament awards banquet.  Additional sponsors including:  CUNA Mutual Group, Harvard University Employees Credit Union, Workers’ Credit Union, Integrated Security Group, MassMutual Federal Credit Union, and Tricorp Federal Credit Union displayed their commitment with a sponsorship of $750 or more.  A complete list of sponsors is further below.

The team from MassMutual Federal Credit Union took the First Place award and the group from NMTW Community Credit Union took Second Place.  The team consisting of CO-OP Financial Services and Massachusetts Credit Union League showed the most courage as the Most Honest Team for the day.  Several golfers demonstrated their individual skills as they competed in closest to the pin and hit the green contests.  Harvard University Employees Credit Union and Quincy Credit Union won the Safety in Numbers Award for fielding the largest number of golfers on the course with eight each.

At the awards banquet, the golfers heard from Robyn Frost, executive director of the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless.  According to Frost, “In the past four years the number of families in Massachusetts that are living in poverty has now grown to one in seven children.  In both urban and suburban communities throughout the Commonwealth, families and individuals struggled to maintain their housing with many unable to hold on and falling into homelessness.”  She also mentioned the successful Bed for Every Child Initiative that has expanded across the state placing beds in homes for children who have none.  Robyn expressed her sincerest thanks to all the credit unions for their continued support, commitment, and kindness to help the Coalition fight to end homelessness.
