2013 Book Drive results push thirteen-year total to over 250,000

For thirteen years, Massachusetts credit unions, their staffs, and members have collected and donated more than 252,000 books to a variety of family service agencies throughout the state including the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless (Coalition) to benefit thousands of underprivileged children.  Each year, during the month of April, the Massachusetts Credit Union League (League) promotes the collection of children’s books.  In May, more than 12,400 books were distributed by 37 credit unions and the League for the Children’s Book Drive.

The credit unions that participated in this year’s Children’s Book Drive went a long way in helping the Coalition as well as other agencies give less fortunate and homeless children throughout the Commonwealth a book of their own.

Credit unions work with their local sponsor companies, schools, community groups, members, etc.  Many credit unions reached out to their membership such as IC Federal Credit Union and Merrimack Valley Federal Credit Union.  “We are always overwhelmed by the generosity of our members and employees,” said Jennifer Maguy, youth services coordinator, at IC Federal Credit Union.  She went on to say, “We are so proud to be able to participate in the Children’s Book Drive and keep our books local by offering them to the Children’s Aid and Family Services of Fitchburg.”  Merrimack Valley Federal Credit Union had a similar experience this year with their membership as Haverhill Branch Manager Carrie Fitzgerald explained.  “Our members have been wonderful this year.  We can always count on their support for the book drive and other charitable efforts.  This year they especially shined by donating the most books we have collected since we started participating several years ago in the Children’s Book Drive.”  The credit union collected the second highest number of books this year.

Congratulations to Hanscom Federal Credit Union for collecting the highest number of books at 4,729.  Each year the staff at Hanscom embraces this project as a full team effort by collecting books throughout the year.  Rounding out the top 5 credit unions are Merrimack Valley Federal Credit Union, 910; MassMutual Federal Credit Union, 689; Leominster Credit Union, 660; and the Massachusetts Credit Union League, 640.

The League’s Social Responsibility Committee extends a special thanks to all the credit unions listed below that participated in this year’s Book Drive.
