Lessons from Gronk

Rob Kimmett, Sr. VP Marketing, New England Credit Union Services, LLC

The Pat’s are down by 4 with three seconds left and Brady throws to Gronkowski who is carrying Panther’s linebacker Luke Kuechly on his back.  A flag gets thrown but the official reverse it saying the ball was not catchable (maybe for a normal human being but I certainly think Gronk had a chance).  The game ends with the Panthers winning and bleary eyed New England Patriots fans go to bed unhappy.

The lesson in this is what happened after the game when Gronk replied to questions from the media about the play that ended the game.  He said, “We don’t make excuses.”  Gronk knew that there were 60 minutes in the game and there were many opportunities to put points on the board and that it is foolish to blame defeat on one single play.

Credit union decision makers don’t usually operate in a world as black and white as professional football where at the end of the game you either win or lose.  But our outcomes are the result of many factors some well considered and expertly executed and others that were not so good.  What I came away from last night’s game with was some additional respect for the home town team and a reminder that success is the culmination of the whole teams efforts over time not just a single random happenstance at the end of the game.
